How Do Leaders Prove They CARE?

In my four decades of identifying, qualifying, training, developing, consulting to, and serving as a leader, I have never come across one, who stated at the onset, that he just didn't really care, but was doing this, for other reasons. Perhaps, at that stage, everyone cares, but I don't believe so! Rather, my theory is that while most pursue leadership, because they initially, at least, believe they are the best choice, and have the ability and what it takes to make a real difference, there are quite a few others, who do so, for personal, ego - driven, power - driven, and/ or selfish purposes! It's not enough to simply say you do, but rather real leaders must be ready, willing and able to clearly demonstrate, and prove they CARE!

1. Clarify; cure; cooperate; choose:

True leadership must begin with a focus and willingness to clarify the issues, challenges, needs, concerns and priorities! How can anyone make a difference, for the better, without first knowing what needs to be addressed? True leaders must proceed in a similar manner as a caring physician, seeking to cure what ails the group, and make the right changes, without harming the organization! They must seek to cooperate and bring people together, to unite, rather than polarize! A real leader must be capable of choosing, and making the best choices, in a timely, well - considered manner!

2. Attitude; attention; articulate; amiable:

When there is conflict, which way will you proceed - to pit one side against the other (letting the chips fall where they may), or in amiable, unifying, meeting - of - the - minds manner? Will you be able and willing to pay attention to the right priorities, while considering the bigger picture, and the possible ramifications and contingencies? Will you see obstacles as being problematic, or as challenges to overcome, and transform into opportunities? Doing this will take a caring, dedicated, positive, can - do attitude! Will you proceed in an amiable, friendly manner, or as a grump?

3. Relevant; real; reach:

How will you determine what is relevant, and the highest priority? Will you maintain a true, open - door policy, and be true to your word? Will you be a real leader, who cares so deeply, he will maintain the highest level of effort, despite challenges, obstacles and inevitable adversities? How will you reach put to those you serve, so as to clearly demonstrate, you really care deeply about them?

4. Empathy; endear; example:

Will you listen effectively, and learn what those you serve, feel, focus on, care about, are concerned with, and consider to be priorities and needs? Proceeding with empathy will endear you with them, because they will come to realize and understand, you deeply care about them! Will you step forward, and set the example, for others to follow?

It's never enough to simply say you do, but real leaders clearly demonstrate how much they CARE! Will you be that type of leader?

Why Great Leaders Must Have HEART

Have you ever really thought about the famous lyrics, You've gotta have heart? Obviously, it isn't merely referring to the organ contained in every human being's chest cavity! Rather, it refers to the combination of caring deeply, being considerate of others, having emotions (including love, etc), possessing and following one's conscience, etc. Perhaps it means simply doing the right thing? As important as this in each of us, because real leaders often have great responsibilities, and must make well - considered decisions, it is even more essential in a leader! Therefore, let's consider, and touch briefly upon, why great leaders must have HEART.

1. Humane; hear; honest:

How should leaders treat others, and each other? Our greatest ones always proceed with the highest and best forms of humanity, behaving consistently in a kind, caring, humane manner. They realize how important it is to let others feel comfortable, confiding in them, and in order to maintain this high level of relationship, they must take the best actions to address needs, concerns and priorities. They truly hear what is being said, because they spend far more time listening than speaking! They consistently behave in an honest, genuine way, and are perceived by others as caring deeply!

2. Empathy; endear; enrich; example:

What type of example should a leader set? Is he empathetic, or does he resort to empty rhetoric and promises? What does he do which might endear him to others? How will he proceed, so as to enrich the experiences of those he serves?

3. Attitude; attention; articulate:

Possessing a positive attitude is far different from proceeding with rose - colored glasses, or simply using positive rhetoric and terminology! It is proceeding in a can - do manner, looking at ways to transform lemons, into lemonade! They pay attention to the past, present and future needs, requirements and conditions, and to the details of getting something accomplished! They articulate their message, ideas and plans, in a clear - cut, caring, motivating way!

4. Relevant; rationale; reach:

Is your approach meaningful and relevant, to those you serve, but who might not have the same perceptions or insights, as you do? Will you thoroughly explain your rationale, and how it benefits the organization, and constituents? How will you reach out to others, to ask them to assist and join you, in your glorious, worthwhile quest?

5. Timely; true; takes care:

Addressing yesterday's issues and concerns, rarely either attracts others deeply, or helps sustain the group! True leaders realize their ideas, and actions, must be timely! If you really care about others, you will commit to being true to them, and telling them the truth, even when it might be somewhat painful or inconvenient to do so! A real leader takes care of those he serves and represents!
Do you have the HEART to be a genuine, meaningful leader? If so, clearly demonstrate that, to others, and do what needs to be done!

Using The Serenity Prayer to Cure Resentment

There is one thing that experience teaches us that mere observation cannot. Experience teaches us through changing us, and most people who are changed arrive at a decision point: will this change me for the better or will I become bitter because of what has happened to me.

At such a fork in the road do we arrive, serially throughout life. Some experiences, however, we could not only have done without, they come to shape and then define us.

Actually, all experiences shape and define. We go one way or the other; toward health or disease.
It's normal and natural to resent certain experiences; those that take us far outside the control we never would surrender. Enter the grief experience. It's why our first cataclysmic grief experience teaches us so much.

The end of my first marriage was such a time. The end of my entire world came, and a lot of that initial time I was sure that being dead would have been a better option. But God always has a purpose in grief, not that I could see it at the time, other than to have faith in believing there was a purpose.

And we have to believe to get better. If we cannot believe we're doomed into cynicism or resentment or denial, or some such tributary of hopeless self-condemnation. But we can believe. Believing there's some purpose in the grief, even if we have no clue what that is (and we won't know), is the way to arrive at an eventual hope, through faith, via continual expressions of hope.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE - IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

Turning our lives around in the way of viewing that life-shattering grief experience differently is always as quick as starting at our choice.

It's never too late to change our attitudes to things. Like the rudder on a massive ship changes its direction, our attitude changes the direction of our lives. And from a simple recommitment comes the power to create the change we desire. From a recommitment we enter the process, prepared to change in adapting to the change we resented.

We have much to gain and nothing to lose by challenging our resentment of every unpalatable experience.

WHERE THE SERENITY PRAYER FITS IN

The short version of The Serenity Prayer is commonly used in recovery, so in the present context it works well:

Lord,

1. grant me the grace to accept the things I cannot change,

2. the courage to change the things I can,

3. and the wisdom to know the difference.

AMEN.

I numbered the lines for ease of working through them.

1. The experience we resent happened. We didn't want it to happen. But it did. It cannot be changed. It's our history. All we can reasonably do is accept it, and we do get there if that's our goal. So, don't give up.

2. We can change if we have the courage to change. And choosing to let something go that we hold a resentment about is something in the domain of the changeable.

3. Wisdom empowers us to do the thing that leads us away from death by going the way of life. There's wisdom in accepting experience so it's not resented and having the courage to replace resentment with hope.

Strokes, Swipes and Sweeps: Movement in Contemporary Still Life Paintings

Still Life is a class of paintings that goes back centuries, with well-known artists including Monet, Picasso, and Van Gogh. The subject of still life paintings has changed over time, but still life is still an imperative part of contemporary art. And one of the most important aspects of still life paintings is movement. While that may sound counterintuitive, it is absolutely true.

Movement in a painting can be described in many different ways. It can be the aspect that draws the eye to the subject of the painting or the sense of change within the painting that draws you through and makes the painting more active rather than passive. However it is described, movement brings a still life painting to life.
Taking a look at some still life works from modern artists, it is clear that the use of a variety of brushstrokes can create an incredible sense of movement. Seeing the different strokes, swipes, and sweeps draws your attention to the flow of a painting. In some of the backgrounds, you'll see larger strokes that lead the eye to the subject of the painting. The subjects themselves have much smaller, more refined brushstrokes that do not take attention away from the still life. Having brushstrokes lead the eye can break our normal view of a painting. We may look at a painting like we would read a book: left to right, top to bottom. However, with the use of bold sweeping strokes, it can lead the gaze in new directions, causing a different reaction to a painting.

Studying the use of strokes in a painting can give us a good idea of the process an artist went through to create the piece. Bold strokes can indicate a more wild energy in the painting, leading a viewer to think that the piece may have been created with more energy. Smaller strokes that are more refined make us imagine a process that is more intricate, time-consuming, and thought-out. Using the idea of having a painting slowly reveal itself to the viewer, we can see how looking more closely at the energy and movement of a painting can reveal the intentions of the artist and even the process. It gives the viewer a better sense of connection with the artwork.

To give the viewer a connection and a reaction to a painting is important. Art has always been an expression of emotion and it continues to be in modern day. Using movement in a painting and creating an ebb and flow is critical and creates synergy in a painting, not only within the painting, but between the painting and its viewer.

The Leadership Formula

"The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office". Dwight D. Eisenhower.
We are all called upon to lead at certain times. We lead in our families, we lead civic organizations, and we lead at work.

No matter what office or station one holds in an organization there are times when they must lead. Although those at the top of organizations are most often called upon to lead everyone at times have opportunities to do so. Often those at the top of an organization are unable to effectively lead because real leadership does not come from an office or title, it comes from within us. It comes from what we do and say.
Though there are many attributes that enable people to lead others effectively none is more important than integrity, competence and trust.

There is a fundamental integrity based formula for leadership that is essential if one is going to effectively lead others. That formula is Integrity + Competence > Trust > Influence > Inspiration = Leadership. That is, integrity and competence build trust, trust creates influence, influence inspires and through influence and inspiration a leader is effective.

A leader must have integrity to gain the trust and faith of those he wishes to lead. That integrity when combined with competence leads to trust - it causes others to trust the leader who has those qualities. People will not trust someone without integrity and they will not trust someone who is not competent.

Trust allows the leader to influence others and if you have influence you can inspire others to do what needs to be done - this is the basis for all successful leadership.

Integrity

"Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching". C. S. Lewis

The essential attribute of the effective leader is integrity. Having integrity means being genuine. It means you mean what you say. It means you are honest. It means to walk your talk. One's actions must be completely aligned with one's words. When others see this alignment it inspires trust. A lack of integrity causes others to mistrust and to doubt us.

Building our integrity is a daily task. It means we must have a clear vision for what we want to achieve and how we want to achieve it. It requires us to be honest with ourselves and at all times with others.
The hallmarks of integrity include:

1. Honesty: speak the truth or do not speak at all.

2. Transparency: disclose everything that others have a right to know or a reasonable expectation to know.

3. Be ethical: ethical standards of conduct should guide you.

4. Care about others: show that you care about others by genuinely listening to them and really considering their ideas.

5. Be true to yourself: do not mimic others; be your true self; get comfortable with who you are and be genuine. It is alright to be inspired and taught be others, but follow your own inner voice.

6. Loyalty: be loyal to those who lead you and to those you lead; do not gossip.

7. Give recognition where it is due: do not brag about your accomplishments; give recognition to the success of others.

8. Be Charitable: help others who need your help.

Competence

Competence also inspires trust. People are naturally influenced by competence. They respect it. When a leader's actions and words are perceived as competent they are trusted more.

Competence means knowing what you are talking about. It comes from experience and study. It requires a process of continual learning. It arises when someone continuously sharpens their skills. When your actions are well done and produce genuine results people are naturally impressed and will listen with confidence. When others are motivated to listen to a leader with confidence trust is built and the leader becomes more effective.

Trust

Others will trust us only if we give them ample reason to do so. People are naturally skeptical and expect a leader to prove themselves. They want to have a good reason to trust a leader. If they perceive that a leader has genuine integrity and competence they will begin to trust that leader.

Trust is very fickle. It takes tremendous sustained effort to build and it can be destroyed by a single act or word. It requires consistent integrity and competence to sustain. However once trust is established it enables the leader to have tremendous influence over those who trust him.

Influence and Inspiration

Once trust is established the leader can influence others. The leader can influence others to adopt a common vision and work toward it. Influence is only the first step in effectively leading others. Effective leadership is about leverage - it is about influencing others in such a way that they will apply their own creativity and thinking to problems to solve them in a way that is aligned with the common vision.

This leverage means that a leader is not limited to his own knowledge and insight into solving problems or pursuing a vision. It unleashes the combined creativity and knowledge of all of those who follow the leader's influence to achieve far more than the leader can possibly do himself.

It is this ability to inspire others to do more than the leader could ever imagine on his own that translates into the most effective leadership. The most effective leader is not the micro-manager. Most organizations are too big and too complex to be directed exclusively by one person's ability, creativity and knowledge. It requires the combined abilities of many people.

Effective leaders unleash that collective ability, creativity and knowledge in a manner that is aligned with a common vision to achieve far more than any individual can achieve alone.

Anyone who wishes to be a truly effective leader must constantly work on these attributes: they must act with consistent integrity, maintain their competence and gain trust.

Distinguishing Drug Abuse From Drug Addiction

Though "drug abuse" and "drug addiction" are often used interchangeably, in reality the terms refer to two distinct behavior patterns. An individual can abuse or misuse drugs without being inevitably addicted to them. Abuse or misuse involves the use of drugs defying the culturally acceptable standards or medically prescribed doses to attain a certain effect. The substances abused may be legal, such as alcohol or prescription drugs, or illegal, like heroin and other street drugs which have no medicinal value.

On the other hand, drug addiction, or compulsive drug use, refers to an uncontrollable desire to use a drug in spite of being aware of harmful psychological and physiological effects that they can have on the body.

Addiction is often characterized by an insatiable appetite for substances by increasing the dosage, leading to a complete dependence on them.

Since abuse and addiction are two distinct concepts, their causes are unique as well. Abuse is generally considered to be more complicated but it is not necessarily triggered by any motivational factor, unlike addiction which is caused by a powerful motivational force. Therefore, in most of the cases, abuse may not always result in addiction, but addiction can certainly lead to abuse.

Impact of drug abuse and addiction on the brain

It has been observed that both drug abuse and drug addiction have similar effects on mind and body. People often view abuse and addiction as a moral weakness or character flaw. One of the common myths surrounding drug use is that quitting it is directly linked to behavioral changes. In reality, addiction is a disease which alters the brain functions, hijacking the natural motivational control circuits. Thus, quitting is simply not a matter of choice or willpower. Though, the decision to use the drug initially might be voluntary, changes in the brain structure due to repeated drug use can inhibit someone's self-control and decision-making ability, causing intense cravings.

Experts attribute the inability to refrain from drug use to these changes in the brain. However, modern medical advancements have led to the development of an array of treatment and rehabilitation options to combat the disastrous effects of addiction and help abusers take control of their lives. Studies have shown that a combination of medications and behavioral therapy can boost the recovery process with minimal withdrawal effects.

Possible reasons leading to drug abuse and addiction

For those who are dependent on illegal substances, it can be difficult to know whether they have crossed the limit. Here are some possible reasons that can trigger drug abuse or addiction:
  • Connecting socially: A strong desire driven by an urge to fit into a certain group could lead people toward drugs.
  • Dealing with problems in life: Continuous drug use can get individuals accustomed to it, and soon it might become the only way to escape from problems and challenges.
  • Using drugs to combat other issues: Serious concerns, such as panic attacks or chronic pain, can cause dependence on drugs, until people discover healthier alternative methods to counter such problems.
  • Strong influence of any drug: Frequent use of drugs triggers dependence on them. Thus, what started as a voluntary choice may slowly transform into a physical and psychological need.
Leading a drug-free life

Many families and individuals have suffered great losses due to addiction to drugs. Fortunately, there is hope, though the battle to eliminate addiction and regain sobriety is challenging. There are numerous treatment strategies that can go a long way in helping people come out of their addiction-related problems.

If you or a loved one is addicted to drugs, it's time to reach out for professional help. Contact the California Drug Abuse Helpline to find the best drug rehab centers and begin the journey to sobriety. Call at our 24/7 helpline number 855-980-1946 to learn about the drug rehabs.

A Lesson in Love From Road Rage

Our family went to get three number 5s at McDonald's in Stellenbosch. First they got the order wrong and brought us McFeasts. We waited patiently in the number 1 parking place. Fortunately, our order came quickly and we were on our way, turning right and stopping at the four-way stop. As I moved off, with the car sort of half-way over the line, someone came from the left across the stop street, right in front of us.

From fright and surprise I gave a little toot on the hooter. Immediately the guy came to a stop in the middle of the street, jumped out of his car and stormed right up to me: "You want to say something to me?" he asked aggressively. Checking where his hands were (in case he wanted to hit me) and making plans to avoid that, I said: "You drove right in front of me."

"That's your opinion," the man said, turned around and got back into his car, rushing off again. For a couple of seconds we sat there quite stunned in the middle of the street. We simply had to smile at this monkey.

"Have a good day," was all I got in before the guy flew off in his car.

Wow, there are strange people out there.

Why am I telling you this story? I want to test this guy's actions against what Paul says to us about love. The
question is: In what way does he comply with or not comply with love through his actions:

Love never gives up. Well, he was fairly impatient!

Love cares more for others than for yourself. Absolutely not!

Love doesn't want what it doesn't have. Maybe my car was better than his?

Love doesn't strut. Well, this guy certainly thought he was better, bigger, more than the guy behind him.

Love doesn't have a swollen head. Maybe so...

Doesn't force itself on others. His behaviour was totally forceful.

Isn't always "me first," Ah, did this guy put himself first? He certainly wasn't thinking about others.
Doesn't fly off the handle. Ah. Another one he failed with flying colours.

Doesn't keep score of the sins of others. I don't know how long he will remember this incident. But what I experienced was some of the anger that he brought with him.

Doesn't revel when others grovel. What I do know is that he wants others to grovel before him.
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth. Nah, this one he fails as well, because he turned the truth of what had happened to his own advantage.

OK, he fails in all of them and gets 0 out of a 100. You just want to say: stupid! I'm not that bad. But if you go and test yourself against each of these, you'll soon see that at one time or another you also don't make it. Too easy to point a finger at someone else, forgetting about the three pointing back at yourself.
These may be too many to remember, but let's read them again and live all of them: 4Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn't want what it doesn't have. Love doesn't strut, doesn't have a swollen head, 5doesn't force itself on others, isn't always "me first," doesn't fly off the handle, doesn't keep score of the sins of others...

Reflection

Is there something that you have to work on?

Read these verses again.

Today try and make love visible.

Bible Reading

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Prayer

Lord, I realise there is so much I still have to learn. There are so many things in my behaviour that I have to change. I must express more of your love inside me to the world out there. Please help me! Amen

3 Ideas to Make Your Summer Marketing Sizzle

We all get stuck in a rut sometimes, but with the beginning of a new chapter, you can use the energy of longer, warmer days to shake up your enthusiasm for marketing your small business. Try these three tips to take your marketing to the next level.

1. Give your customers something to talk about.

Let your loyal customers do your marketing for you. How often have you tried a new restaurant or gone to a new store because your friend recommended it? Word of mouth marketing really works. You just have to be worthy of being talked about.
  • What new service or feature can you provide your customers?
  • What promotional product can you give away that allows customers to share your brand with friends?
  • What social media or email newsletter topics will make your content more sharable?
2. Offer free gifts or financial incentives.

Everybody likes a deal. Which of these makes sense for your business?
  • Gift cards for referrals.
  • Gift cards for spending a certain amount of money, like $25 for every $200 spent.
  • Buy one get one free or at a discount promotions.
  • Certain percentage off for particular days. If Tuesdays are always slow for your business, consider offering Tuesday discounts to drive more traffic.
3. Encourage customer loyalty.

Ask yourself what keeps you coming back when you are a customer. Your customers likely have the same tendencies and experiences.
  • Use frequent customer cards that reward customers with a freebie after coming back 10 times.
  • Send email offers for a discount on the next product or service.
  • Offer discounts or a freebie if your customer brings or refers a friend to your business.
Obviously this is not an exhaustive list, but one that's worth testing. A lot of times we've found these small steps skyrocket your ability to stay engaged and present in the minds of your clients and customers. Take advantage of these tactics especially if your seasonal peak times are during the warmer months of summer. People are generally more mobile and social during these warmer months of the year, leaving you a giant opportunity to go a bit viral. What's the different between companies with longevity, that really stay consistent even during times of uncertainty, and companies that struggle and eventually fall off? The answer is that companies that consistently do the dirty work of staying consistent and engaged with their clients through marketing efforts like the above tend to outlive the others.

Any of these should be easy to write and format. You can give them away for free on your website and collect customer emails and information in return to increase your customer list.

2. Videos

Don't forget the value of a free gift. Tips for Creating a Flyer for Your Carpet Cleaning Biz

The main goal of your carpet cleaning business is to get paying customers. There are different ways you can achieve this goal, but like with anything in business, it's going to take hard work and consistency. You have to be headstrong about marketing your services to prospects. It's common for business owners to lose motivation once they hit a rut. Every industry has a slow season, so you just have to plan accordingly. One way around dips in revenue caused by slow traffic is to enhance your marketing efforts. One way to do this is to create a flyer. In this flyer, you should go over your services, carpet cleaning equipment your company uses and unbeatable deals you're offering.

Designing flyers can be done all year round to help keep business coming in consistently. The flyers you make should be designed in a way that will make a great first impression to new prospects and act as a friendly reminder to customers who have dealt with you in the past. The sole purpose of a flyer is to pique the interest of prospects, so that they are more likely to make contact with your business.

What to Have in Your Flyer

There are key details that need to be included inside of your flyer, such as the following:
  • Services provided: Include a list of new and popular carpet cleaning services you offer and any equipment you use. You can point out any specific tile cleaning or portable carpet cleaning machines you have available.
  • Your rates: Do research to ensure that the rates you're offering are unsurpassed by your competitors.
  • Contact details: Don't forget to include company info, such as your phone number, address, email, website URL and hours of operation.
Creating Your Flyer

You can use Microsoft or another publishing software that has flyer-making capabilities. As you're designing your flyer, make sure to choose colors and images that look nice and professional. Brighter colors are good for grabbing the attention of the passersby.

Consider adding a tear off space, where people can rip off a piece of the flyer containing your business name, phone numbers and website address. In the rest of the flyer, advertise your biggest deals and most popular services. Don't forget to list the benefits of using your carpet cleaning services, and any special equipment you have. Also include any "specials" you may be offering at the time. Remember, it's about selling the sizzle not the steak!

http://www.steam-brite.com/ is one of the leading distributor of quality cleaning supplies and cleaning equipment all around the USA and abroad. Steam-brite also sells starter kits to individuals who are interested in starting and/or expanding their own cleaning business. steam-brite.com offers the most comprehensive cleaning equipment and cleaning supplies selection for the best prices on the web.

What To Do When You Lack Perseverance

Sometimes people are put into situations where they have to persevere. Otherwise, they face dire consequences. For instance, during a war, soldiers may not have the luxury of sleep if they are placed in combat situations. They may have to stay awake and alert for way more hours than most of us would be able to endure.

People who face certain debilitating conditions may find themselves needing to persevere to overcome those conditions. In keeping with the soldier reference, someone who loses a limb in battle may need to go through intense therapy to cope and compensate for this.

But what happens when you are not faced with a life-and-death situation? How do you persevere when it is not absolutely necessary for your survival? If this is the case, it could be that you are not looking deep enough into what you want.

How do you determine what your passions are?

Start by thinking about your daydreams. Often, we imagine our lives different from what they are now through those daydreams. If they occur frequently enough, that could be a great indication of what you are passionate about.

Another way to determine your passions is to ask others.

Sometimes, we take what we are good at for granted. For example, you may be great at giving advice but wouldn't think twice about pursuing that because it's just something you do. When others tell you that you are good at this, it could open your eyes to pursue it.

People who know you can also give you insight into what you are not good at even when you believe you are. This could be a big reason why you lack perseverance. You are simply pursuing the wrong things for yourself. Of course, it is never easy to hear that you are not good at something, especially when you have the opposing belief. But in the end, if you get enough people to set you straight, you can then choose the right alternative to get you back on track.

Another possibility is you are good at something but are burnt out from doing it.

You have been doing it for so long you could practically do it in your sleep. But you hate it. There is no longer any of the magic left. You are simply going through the motions. You have no reason, in this case, to push for anything because you have exhausted all options. If this is the case, move onto something else.

How To Accept Rejection

We learn at an early age that we don't get everything we want. In other words, we have had to deal with rejection since childhood. This makes you think that people accept rejection easily. However, the exact opposite is usually true.

People start to develop an invisible shield against rejection.

They may show anger or resentment to the people who are serving up the rejection. But, in many cases, it can show who is resilient and who is likely to continue until they get what they want.

No one likes to hear negative comments about themselves. People take it personally. However, knowing the reason for rejection can help change your direction. You can correct the aspects that made people reject you in the first place.

This won't work with everything. For instance, if a person you are attracted to does not return the favor, it may be difficult or impossible to turn this around. Then again, there are numerous stories of people who persevered even when they were rejected time and again, and won the love of their lives.

Another instance where you may face rejection is during a job interview.

Many candidates will pass this off as incompetence on the part of the interviewer, and there are certainly cases where this is true. But, you should always try to evaluate the reasons why the interviewer did not choose you. You'd be surprised at how few people even ask for the reasons. Interviewers won't typically volunteer this information. Many will feel you don't care if you don't ask.

In many cases, rejection is not personal.

You may not have the necessary skills when seeking a job, or you may not have enough experience, etc. In other cases, it may be somewhat personal, but it may be in your best interest to get rejected. For instance, if you don't have an aggressive personality, do you want to pursue a career that requires one? If you are in sales, you need to have this driving personality to succeed.

Finally, use rejection to your benefit.

People who accept rejection and don't give up are usually the ones who eventually get that acceptance. Sometimes, the very fact that you are persevering is what turns the tables from rejection to acceptance. Who is to say that next opportunity is not the one that will accept you? You won't know unless you continue on your quest.

Want Better Ideas? Then Stop Brainstorming!

I used to be a fan of brainstorming. What could be better for generating ideas than gathering your team around a table, presenting the challenge, and then letting the ideas flow! No bad ideas here! Just open the mental floodgates and let the brilliance pour out! Each idea sparking another, and another! Sounds perfect, doesn't it?

Except it doesn't work.

Brainstorming-despite the positive press it's gotten, and still gets-doesn't work. Why? Two words: human nature.

As humans (sorry puppies, I'm speaking to the humans here), we can be influenced and swayed by authority. When it comes to brainstorming, there are two types of authority that are particularly prevalent: the authority of the leader and the authority of the crowd.

Here's how they play out:

You're in a brainstorming session. Frank, sitting across from you, throws out an idea (because remember, there are no bad ideas in a brainstorming session!). But you notice the boss give a slight, flickering frown. Prior to noticing the boss's expression, you were going to toss out a similar idea, building on Frank's. But now you decide to hold back and see how this plays out.

In the meantime, Sloane shares a thought, and you can feel the excitement! The majority of the team is instantly enthusiastic! You don't fully agree with Sloane, but it's clear you're in the minority. Sensing the current, you decide to get on board. And Sloane wins the day, while Frank fades into oblivion.
Brainstorming is supposed to be judgment-free. But we're human, and we are influenced by those around us.

So is there a better way? Absolutely!

When I was the Executive Producer of a hit comedy TV show, our job was to be creative, week after week after week. And over the years, I gradually discovered that the best ideas tended to be generated individually, and then developed collectively. Here's how it would work.

When we had our weekly "pitch meetings" (the meeting where we pitched our ideas for the upcoming show), each writer would come to the meeting with the ideas and scripts that they'd come up with, generally on their own. When an idea got a favorable response, we'd work as a team to develop and improve it.

How can you put this technique to work?

The next time you and your team are in need of a creative idea, instead of holding a brainstorming session, try this process:

1. Gather the team and clearly define the question for which you're seeking ideas (and make sure you're defining the right question!).

2. Send them off to generate individual ideas. But here's the important part: give them a quota and a time limit. The key is to give them not quite enough time to reach the quota. For example, you might say, "I want 20 ideas from each of you, and you have a half hour. Come back here with your ideas in 30 minutes." The odds are that few, if any, of your team members will be able to generate 20 ideas in 30 minutes. But that's not the point. The point is force them to think beyond the easy answers; to force them to get creative.

3. Now have your group meeting where each person pitches their ideas. Because the ideas are written down, there should be no withholding because of peer pressure. Another option is to gather the group and immediately have each person pass their ideas to the person on their right, and have that person read the ideas.

By using this (or a similar) system, you get around the bias of human nature. You'll find that you'll get more ideas, and better ideas, than you would with a pure brainstorming session.

It certainly worked for my team-and I'm certain it will work for yours as well.

Tips on Handling Mistakes Within Your Company

All employees will eventually make a mistake. When a mistake is made, there will be consequences. However, your response to the situation, as a manager and a leader, take will dictate the actions the employees take.

Here are my top 7 tips to help you ensure that you are handling the situation in the most effective manner.

1) Analyze the situation

How big is the mistake? Is it one that should not have been made but can be rectified? Or did it cost your company hundreds of thousands of dollars? In this case, both of these situations will have very different courses of action.

2) Understand the employee

Has this employee made a mistake like this in the past? Is this a habit or just a one-time problem? Taking to them about what happened and why it happened will give you helpful in-sight. Maybe they had a family emergency that put off their game or maybe they just have a poor work ethic.

3) Refer to the company culture if one has been established

We previously discussed the spectrum of consequences, or all the reactions that a manger can take. If someone has made a similar mistake in the past, how did other managers react?

4) Understand what type of leader you are and what you want to accomplish

Do you want your employees to be scared of you or do you want to encourage them and support their actions? Do you want to be their leader, their friend, or both?

5) Create a mental list of all your options and their impacts

You choose to ignore the mistake all together- but that might result in promoting incompetency. You can publicly call out the employee- but that might ruin their confidence. You can have a three-strike rule. You can discuss the situation with the employees. You can call a group meeting. Or a combination of all the options.

6) Pick the option that you feel the most confident about

Think what the impact will be and how you want your company to be seen. Make the decision that makes the most sense. Sometimes, it's not always the best for the employee but it may be an action that needs to be taken for the good of the company.

7) Follow through on your actions

While it may be hard, do not vacillate on the implementation.

If your company's current plan for handling mistakes is not one that encourages learning or growth, it might be time to update the strategy. Consider making an appointment with a business coach to see how changing the company culture could be beneficial. The process might require small changes or a complete overhaul of the current actions. A business coach would be able to tell you the steps to take and explain the overall effect it will have on the company.

How To Build Brand Buzz at Trade Shows With Giveaways

It's a new year with another lineup of trade shows probably already on your calendar. This is the year to try something new to promote your brand. Find a way to stand out among the lines of exhibitors at trade shows by creating buzz with your trade show giveaways.

BEST PRACTICES FOR TRADE SHOW GIVEAWAYS

Create buzz before the show starts.

Pre-show mailing with branded products, like magnets, sticky notes or sticky phone cleaners can let attendees know to look for you at the trade show. Even if you are just sending a pre-show email, let attendees know where to find your booth and what they can expect as a freebie when they stop by.

Reflect your brand.

Choose branded giveaways that show attendees (your potential clients and customers) what your brand stands for: quality!

Be useful and unique.

You want attendees to use your giveaway so it must be useful. But you also want attendees to want your giveaway. That's what creates the buzz around your table. Find a product that will have them telling their friends about it, and you will see your traffic multiple.

Choose long-lasting products.

Attendees should be able to take your product home and use it daily without it falling apart. This goes hand in hand with choosing a quality product to represent your brand.
Connect with the audience.

Think about who you are attempting to connect with. Is it a health care crowd, a tech crowd, a room full of teachers? What would they find useful?

TRY A SAMPLE FIRST TO MAKE SURE IT'S A GOOD FIT!

Trade show brand giveaways can be a breeze if you pick the right product for the right crowd. Good promo handouts are designed to create the buzz you want. A lot of companies offer free samples of these types of promo products so you can get a sense of the potential.

Good promo companies will offer you lightning fast responses when it comes to inquiries on pricing, bulk pricing, mock ups with your logo, samples of the product, and personal recommendations on what exact product might be a good fit for your company.

Be wary of companies that simply offer order fulfillment on the page without easy access to customer service. They want your money but don't care about your deadlines as much.

With these tips and tricks you will be on your way to being a standout at your next trade show!

Live Like A Hero

Ever notice the first words invariably spoken when we recognize a hero publicly? "I never felt like a hero, I'm no hero," these words are the mantra of heroes. Regardless of the nature of their actions being hailed as heroic, they saw nothing unusual in their response. What is the difference in these people and those who stare in admiration at their acts? They have always lived like a hero; one day they were called on to act like a hero.

Heroes spend a lifetime following a creed of honor and respect for others. What traits are normally found in them?

1) They act responsibly in every situation.

2) They live compassionately, tending to look beyond weakness in others as they seek to find and focus on their strengths.

3) Reliability is their creed. They take pride in establishing relationships where they expect others to know they will be there for them. And they are.

4) They stand strong in the face of adversity.

5) They take the time to know themselves, to recognize and improve on their weaknesses while maintaining their strengths.

6) They avoid idle chatter, preferring to shoot straight and seek solutions rather than criticizing others efforts that may be failing.

7) They have an innate ability to understand that life is a series of head-on collisions; they wear a mental helmet of faith, hope and integrity. They live expecting the best possible outcome.

8) They rarely have a plan B. They understand that you get what you prepare for; they always prepare for what they may be called to act upon.

9) Injustice in any form ignites a passionate response in them; for them it is intolerable.

10) They are intuitive, seeming to know when and how to act and react to situations.

These are good old-fashioned traits that many parents continue to build and embrace in raising their family to be productive members of society. Look closely behind the hero and you will likely find parents or some adult or affiliation that embraced character building.

Heroes are not born; they are raised to embrace standards that encompass empathy, compassion, respect for self and others, to act responsibly and to embrace faith in their life. If you weren't raised that way you can still embrace the traits that create the best possible response to every situation. Even if you are never recognized publicly, you can be sure you will face the time when you are called on to be a hero allowing you to touch another person in a life altering situation. You may never know that you were their hero, but they will. It begins with choosing to live like a hero; if you do, you will always be prepared to act like one.

What You've DONE Says The Most About Your Life

Whether you seek or serve in some position of leadership, or whether we take an objective look at what you're really all about, perhaps the best way to evaluate and consider someone's life, is to look at their deeds and accomplishments! My late father always told me, the best way to judge someone's life, is to think about how and if, others will remember him, and what will they remember! Will you be remembered by your rhetoric, possessions, or how you life may have had an impact, for the better, on others? Isn't that really how we should also, judge our leaders, not by the level of their rhetoric, or the quality of their articulation, but rather, how their actions, may have had a positive impact on their organization, and/ or society? The best way to consider someone's life, purpose and impact, is not merely by their possessions, or financial fortune, but rather, by considering what they have DONE when they were alive! Have you ever wondered what differentiates those who are remembered after they depart, versus others who cannot depart quickly enough?

1. Donated; delivered; designed:

Let's consider a scenario, where two individuals accumulated huge financial fortunes. One not only was an excellent businessman, but also a generous philanthropist, while the other was predominantly self - serving! Look at how one donated to worthwhile projects, and to what degree. How did each support the causes nearest and dearest to his heart? Overlook the self - proclamations and self - praise/ rhetoric/ claims, but look deeper and more thoroughly, to what was actually delivered/ achieved! Donations may be financial, but they might have also been donations of time, etc, so it is important to consider, what someone might have originated/ designed, and implemented/ achieved!

2. Organized; opinions; options:

Was an individual satisfied simply cloning the approaches, ideas, etc, of those who served before him, or did he contribute something different, relevant and sustainable? Look to see if he had a plan, and proceeded in an organized, well - considered manner, or merely proceeded crisis to crisis? Was he ready, willing and able, to express his personal opinions, and reasons, or was he afraid to rock - the - boat? Did he weight options and alternatives, or remain within the limitations of his comfort zone?

3. Needs; niche:

Each of us have certain areas of strength, as well as weakness. The difference between success and less spectacular results, is often, the ability to understand these, and use them, to best apply to the specific niche of your group. Whose needs did an individual serve, his own, or those he served?

4. Energy; empathy; example:

How can you fully know which path to take, unless you begin by listening effectively to those you serve, learning/ discovering their needs, concerns, and priorities, and then proceeding, with empathy? No one follows a lethargic individual for long, so one's results are also directly related to the level of his personal energy! If you want to be remembered, in a positive way, consider the type of example you set for others!

What will your life achievements, and what you've DONE, say about you? It's up to you!

5 Steps Of Interactive Selling And Leadership

Although some appear to shy away from the fact, much of the skills needed for effective leadership, are directly related to one's sales abilities and skills. In both cases, there is a huge difference between merely using some techniques, or trying to sell something (an idea, product or one's self), as opposed to becoming a proficient, interactive salesperson! I have taught and written about the need to understand and use the 5 steps for answering/ addressing concerns/ objections for four decades, which includes: restating what you believe the concern to be; empathizing; answering; recreating the need/ desire; and closing the deal; and unless this is done in an interactive manner, little of consequence is usually achieved. Let's review these 5 basic steps of interactive selling.

1. Fact - find: Learn the need:

The surest way to create problems for yourself, even when there are none there, is to assume you know what others are concerned with, or what their objections might be. Listen effectively. ask questions, and seek to discover, understand and address the perceived, and actual needs, priorities and concerns, of those you serve. Merely talking, before you know what others want to know more about, often opens up, a Pandora's Box.

2. Discuss benefits - not just facts/ data/ information:

Few people get very excited about raw data. Perhaps even fewer care about problems (real and/ or perceived), unless there are solutions presented! A leader's responsibility. therefore, is to avoid the trap of overly using data, and presenting a list of things done, features available, etc. Rather, you should present your ideas and solutions, in a way which focuses on, and discusses, how constituents and their organization, will benefit, and why!

3. Always discuss 3 options - Never just yes or no:

Many individuals in positions of leadership, as well as salespeople, become stymied, when someone doesn't respond to their ideas in a positive manner. Often, this is because of an inability to properly present alternatives/ options. If you ask someone for a yes, or no, answer, you open yourself up, to being closed down, because how will you respond, if they reply in the negative? However, if you say something like, Is Tuesday morning good for you, or is Thursday at 10 AM, or 1 PM, better?

4. Ask for sale:

I have listened to some great presentations, which achieve little positive results, merely because the presenter, never asked for the sale. The excuse or exclamation, is generally, someone's discomfort, or refusal to widen their comfort zone. However, if you never asked, how will you get a positive response? I suggest using a series of trial closes, such as, Doesn't that make sense, etc, combined with using the infamous, ZTL (zip the lip!).

5. Close:

What does closing really mean? In most cases, it means walking away with a meeting of the minds, agreement, deal, etc. Again, you'll rarely close the deal, unless you ask for it, and so, if you are seeking money, provide choices, such as, Many of my clients contribute $5,000, or $10,000, while others feel more comfortable beginning with $25,000. Which would you like to begin with? Remember, the same rule, ZTL, is extremely important here!

There is a big difference between taking orders, speaking to customers, and, actually, selling. Some say one can either do so in an interactive way, or not. I believe the best results, and the most reliable approach, is invariably, the interactive one! Get others involved in the discussion, because you are trying to make a deal, not give a sermon!

Criticising Others: Do Some People Criticise Others To Make Themselves Feel Better?

There are a number of things that someone can do to change how they feel, and it could be said that some of these things are going to be better than others. For example, if one was to reach out for chocolate whenever they need to change their mood, it could set them up to experience negative consequences.

However, if they were to only do this from time to time, it might not have much of an effect on them. It is all going to depend on how they respond to it, as this could still be more than enough to cause them problems.

A Differed Response

As while there are some people who can eat as much chocolate as they like and not put on any weight; there are others who are different. Just eating one bar could end up changing their appearance.

But even if one could eat as much chocolate as they like without it having an effect on their appearance, it doesn't mean that it will be doing their body any good. It could just take them a little while longer to see what it is doing to them.

Exercise

What they could do instead is to go for a run or a bike ride, or to go to the gym, for instance. This will allow them to change how they feel, and they won't be doing something that will end up having negative effect on them.

Their mood will improve and they will also be giving their body what it needs to function at its best. If this was to cause them harm, it would probably be due to them pushing themselves to hard or engaging in too much exercise.

Action

When one takes this approach, it could show that they are not taking the time to reflect on why they feel this way. Instead, they want to feel better and they end up doing something to make this happen.
Their body is going to take over and there will be no reason for them to use their head; if they were to do this, it could just slow things down. This could be how one prefers to experience life, and this could be the best option at times.

Stepping Back

Yet, there are going to be moments when it will be in their best interest to step back, and to reflect on how they feel. This doesn't mean that one needs to get caught up in their emotions; it is just to give them the opportunity to take a deeper look into what is taking place.

If they were to do this, they might be able to deal with what is causing them to experience life in this way. Their mood would then improve and they wouldn't need to find ways to change how they feel.

Two Sides

If this was to take place, they might find that something external is getting to them, and one might then need to deal with this. Or, if this is not an option, they it might be necessary for them to change what is taking place within them.

What this comes down to is that one is not always going to be able to change what is taking place around them, but they can always change how they respond to it. Even so, it might be only a matter of time before their external circumstances do change.

Self-Control

Therefore, when one has the ability to define how they feel, it will be a lot easier for them to function at their best. They are not going to have the tendency to be overwhelmed by what is taking place within them, and can be because they will be able to sooth themselves.

Clearly, this is the ideal, and something that a lot of people would like to be able to experience. If everyone on this planet could do this, the world would be a radically different place.

Another Outcome

When one can't handle their own emotions, it can cause them to harm themselves in a number of different ways. Their priority will then be to change how they feel, and what this does to them will be a matter of secondary importance.

But if they don't harm themselves, they could end up having a negative effect on the people around them. Nevertheless, through doing this, they could ruin their relationships and end up pushing people away.

Criticising Others

One could find that they don't feel too good, and then this could result in them putting someone down. They might have certain things that they like to focus on, or this could be something that varies from one moment to the moment.

There is also the chance that they will believe that they have every right to do this, and there is then going to be no reason for them to change. The effect their behaviour has on others will be overlooked and they will only care about their own needs.

Self-Hate

If one was to look into why they behave in this way, they may find that it allows them to disconnect from what is taking place within them. It is then not just that one doesn't feel good; it is that they don't feel good about themselves.

Thus, if one isn't putting other people down, they are probably putting themselves down; how they treat others is then a reflection of how they treat themselves. The toxicity that is within them is then spilling out and affecting the people around them.

Awareness

The sooner they are able to deal with what is taking place within them, the sooner they will stop harming others. This is something that can take place with the assistance of a therapist, for instance.

Feeding Mistakes That Can Have Bad Effects On Your Child's Growth And Development

It is not uncommon for parents to find difficulties with feeding their kids. Even getting them to eat something healthy for snack times can be quite an ordeal.

Unfortunately, their eating habits can have negative effects on their present and future behaviors and attitudes. As such, it is important that parents avoid and correct key feeding mistakes that can have a bad impact on their growth and development. This is a crucial thing to do if you want your children to grow up the right way and avoid being "problem kids".

Below are some of the key feeding mistakes parents should avoid:

Interfering too much while the child is eating.

Studies show that about 85% of parents try to control their child's food intake at mealtime. They have a say about the child taking two more bites or insisting that he or she finish a plateful of food so that he or she will get a dessert.

This is a crucial mistake to avoid since children are born with the natural ability to regulate their food intake. If parents try to get children to eat less or more, for example, they inadvertently teach their kids not to trust their body, which in turn, can hinder self-regulation. Various studies have also shown that pressuring children to eat results in less food intake while cutting them off at mealtime increases the likelihood they will eat even if they are hungry (hence, leading to obesity).

Short-order cooking if your child doesn't like the food.

You will always find difficulties in feeding picky eaters. There will always be instances when they won't like to eat dinner because they don't like the produce you cooked. And because you don't want your child to go to bed hungry, you make him or her an alternative meal on the spot just so he or she would eat.
Parents should avoid and immediately correct this mistake since in general, kids learn to eat a variety of food at different paces. This mistake is telling a child that he or she shouldn't expand his or her food repertoire which will decrease his or her eating confidence.

When you force your kids to eat all the vegetables you serve them, they may become averse to them instead of gradually learning to like them, had there been no pressure.
