Practice posing.

In magazines you'll find modeling poses that will inspire you for sure, so look for them. You can modify them, by adding your personality to them, that way you'll make them your own. What you can do to learn these poses faster is to practice them in front of your mirror, be creative by changing the angle. Look for friends or relatives, ask them to watch you while doing these poses, so you can get critiques, while practicing.

Select your clothing for the shoot.

The main factor you need to understand is that the portfolio is an asset that will sell you as a model, thus you need to delete anything that distracts from that goal. One good advice is to maintain the clothing selection as simple as possible. Don't use prints or patterns, it's best to stay with solid colors. Use the clothes you already know fit you perfectly, thus don't wear anything too loose or tight. You need to posses fashion forward outfits in your portfolio, thus choose several outfit choices. The reason of this, is because you really don't want to posses photos of yourself in only one or a couple. If you desire is also to get into commercial print modeling, you need to add a swimsuit as well.

Get yourself ready to demonstrate versatility.

It's really critical to posses several looks selected for the type of modeling you'll do. A good photographer will tell you exactly the types of pictures you will need. Good representations of a model's face are done by head shots. The standard size of these are 8x10''. This photo includes the model's head and also the upper torso. These photos are taken at close range. The key element here is that the head shot focus primarily on the model's face. Use not too much of make up when doing these photos, the idea is to show the facial structure and skin tone of your face. This is a must have in your portfolio, so make sure you have at least one.

Beauty shots.

These are mostly artistic. When doing this shot, you need to pose dramatically. If your intention is to work in the commercial print model field, this photo is a must have in your portfolio.

Fashion shots.

These shots are pictures of a model wearing different outfits. This time the focus of the shot is the clothing. The make up is considered a complement. If you intent to get into fashion modeling, you need to add these kind of pictures in your portfolio.

Swimsuit shots.

Centers the attention in the model's body. You'll need this photo if you intent to work in commercial print modeling.

Editorial shots.

If you intention is to get into commercial print modeling, you'll need an editorial shot. These kind of shots are centered around a story. You'll be playing a character in a particular narrative.
