I have a rabbit that lives in a barn across the garden. The other night I ventured, as usual into the barn to feed Chamade, only to be greeted by a loud scratching noise. Closer inspection revealed that the noise came from Chamade's little food bag. Obviously there was an animal trapped inside.
You are not going to believe what happened next:
My mind went on orange alert. As mentioned I have done a lot of clearing work, but had noticed that recently fears were resurfacing as I had to face up to my deepest fears.
Dealing with some animal in a small food bag was hardly one of those!
The orange alert inside my addled brain went deep orange when the thought crossed my mind that there was a rat inside the food bag. I hate rats and the mere thought of having one inside my rabbit's living quarters filled me with disgust.
What to do?
I "courageously" walked over to the small food bag and opened it. Inside was a medium sized "grey" mouse. The relief was considerable as I saw the grey mouse scurrying around in the bag. Since the light was not too good, I decided to get a torch and have a better look at the creature before letting it out in the garden, hoping that it would walk off next door. Well, I think you can already see where we are going with this story.
Here is my brain on auto pilot, my only excuse was that I felt tired. I have seen many mice before. Alas, for some reason I was reluctant to pick up the bag and let the poor thing out in the garden.
Well, you won't believe my surprise when I threw proper light one the issue:
Inside the food bag was the tiniest, sweetest little dormouse with tiny pink ears. I was overjoyed, not yet contemplating my utter stupidity.
It had been a long day. My neighbour had decided to "entertain" us with the noise of some stone cutting machine all day for two days. The noise penetrated every room in our house.
Our brains are very sensitive
Even though I have been meditating for years and usually nothing upsets me too much these days, I had noticed that my brain had felt like mash after two days of grinding noise.
What I first saw as a medium sized grey mouse in the semi dark was tiny, brown and beautiful!
Your consciousness sees, not your eyes
What you focus on in the deepest corner of your subconscious appears in front of your eyes.
Reality is a man made thing
I should have known better, having meditated for many years. We have seen quite a few dormice in the garden in the summer months, alas my brain did not connect to that logic at the time.
The moral of the story?
Don't think your fears are real. They are tiny little dormice wanting to teach you a lesson. Only if you don't heed the lesson will they turn into rats.
