How one will progress, from being a potential, to actual leader, is often dependent upon a variety of factors and variables. This determination and distinction, often begins with one's perception and ability to conceive, accelerates or decelerates, based on attitude, aptitude, and persistence, and differentiates those who are effective, versus those remaining ineffective! When someone is either elected, selected, appointed, or somehow, ascends, to a position of leadership, whether he becomes a real leader, or a wannabe, bring forth three possibilities: 1) Someone who is challenged to gain traction, make a real, positive impact, or influences his group, positively; 2) An individual who settles for being mediocre, or run - of - the - mill, generally avoids doing anything, which might be unpopular, or rock - the - boat; or (3) A meaningful, relevant, effective, true leader. This article will review what differentiates the third possibility from the other two, and using the mnemonic approach, briefly discuss, how true leaders CLIMB to the top.
1. Clarity; clever; character: Are you one of the few, who possesses a clear vision, of what the strengths and weaknesses of your organization, are, and are willing to proceed, without prejudgment, with a rare clarity, and a willingness and readiness to clearly, thoroughly articulate your motivating message? This requires someone, who is talented, astute, and clever, because there is often a somewhat, fine line, between maintaining one's commitment to absolute integrity, and seeking an easy, shortcut! Will you have the character needed to stand out from the crowd, not because of your rhetoric, but, rather, because of the quality of your character?
2. Learn; listen; leadership: Far too many individuals, seem to believe, they not only have all the answers, but the only ones! Quality leaders continuously learn from every experience, and listen intently, in order to discover the perceptions, goals, needs and priorities, of those they serve. Unless one is ready, willing and able to do so, how can he ever show genuine, effective leadership?
3. Ideas; integrity; imagination; instincts: One must develop and utilize, certain leadership instincts, on a regular basis. This means possessing a combination of meaningful ideas, absolute integrity (especially when it is challenging to do so, an imagination (which permits one to see what should be, not just what is), etc.
4. Memory; message; meaning: Great leadership come from developing a relevant memory, and learning from every experience, in order to gain expertise, judgment, and wisdom. One must carefully examine, and evaluate the meaning of his message, and ask if it will resonate, with those he serves, in a positive way.
5. Best; beliefs; bring: Will you settle for the easiest, most expedient, least challenging, controversial approach? Or, will you commit, to consistently, bring forth, your quality beliefs, in order to make a positive difference?
There are several paths to reaching the higher levels of leadership, but fewer options, if you want to make that challenging CLIMB, to becoming an elite leader! Which course will you choose?
