I personally believe that some of these powers should be trained and inherently become a part of your personal psyche more so than others. That's just my opinion though!
The more powerful you are, the easier it will be for you to achieve your goals and the live the life that you are after.
Formal Power:
Let's begin with one of the most obvious - Formal Power.
This type of power comes from the role that you play within any given organization whether it is public or private. The power that inherently comes with a given role or job. This is one of the least powerful of powers in my mind. It is based solely on the role or job you do for somebody else. Keep in mind that at the end of the day, the true power comes from those around you allowing you to have this power. An elected official only has the power that the people give them. Police officers only have the authority because society at large allows them to have it.
You can increase this power.
Work towards getting promoted
Look for new opportunities to get further up the 'ladder'
Always look to be made the 'leader' in whatever project you are working on.
Network Power:
The old adage - 'it's not what you know but who' has more than a snippet of truth in it. The people that you surround yourself with will help you achieve your goals and increase your influence. These trusted people will offer advice, news, intelligence, new opportunities and introductions to others. The keys to increasing your network power include:
Read books on networking and personal relationships
Create a plan to achieve this
Attend seminars
Be a resource and help to others.
Expert Power:
Having this expert power comes from your ability, skills and experience. When others value the expertise and skills that you have, they will come to you for advice about it.
Work hard at your skills, whatever they may be.
Study and keep up to date with all the latest developments in your field
Write articles and keep a blog on your expert domain.
Teach others your skills
This power will earn you the ability to command more money for your services.
Moral Power:
Moral power springs from what you believe in and allows you to convince others that what you do is morally just. This power is extremely important in life as it allows others to see 'what you stand for'. Unfortunately, it is not given the same level that the other powers have, even though it forms the foundations of the other powers. Knowing what you stand for morally will allow you to increase your other powers appropriately.
Image Power:
So we finally come to Image Power. No matter how powerful you become in the others, this one will make or break you. This is not so much your power but rather the perception of the power that you have. The bottom line is that people will believe what they seem to think is true. Take the time to ensure that the perception that you are generating is in line with the image that you want to portray.
Don't let outside forces influence how you are perceived. Take control and make a conscious effort on how this happens. Build your own personal brand and reputation the way you want. Be aware of your actions, words and social standing.
Always keep in mind that the perception of who you are is the truth of who you are to those individuals at that point in time.
Deciding who you want to be in life is critical and one of the foundation stones of what you want to achieve in life.
Once you've decided who you actually want to be, take appropriate action to build your powers consciously. Make a plan and execute it. Perception is critical here so begin right now to portray the image of you that you want others to see. Don't wait.
