Questions to Ask When Interviewing UI Developers

By asking these UI developer interview questions, you will be able to assess if a candidate is a right fit for your organization.

With the growth of e-commerce around the world, there has been a corresponding demand for User Interface (UI) developers across a wide range of industries.

A UI developer is someone who possesses design skills and knows how to use front-end development technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for developing functional and interactive websites and web applications. In the course of their work, the UI developer considers the client’s design and development standards and guidelines and also conducts user research. Based on this, they devise better interfaces to enhance the user experience.

When developing interfaces, the UI developer must take care to ensure that these interfaces are accessible to users with differing abilities. The developer must also know how to integrate the user interface with the back-end technology layer. Additionally, the developer must resolve any interface problems by carrying out usability tests.

There are plenty of qualified developers, but you want to find someone that can match your work goals and fit in well with your organization’s work culture. By asking them the right UI developer interview questions, you can assess both their technical skills and general abilities.

Some Commonly Asked UI Developer Interview Questions:

•  How is User Experience different from User Interface development?

•  What is your understanding of Semantic HTML?

•  What is a CSS Reset?

•  What are the new features in HTML5 that make developing forms more convenient?

•  What are some of the things that we must consider for developing multilingual sites?

•  How do you test that the UI is working across multiple browsers?

•  When to use CSS and when to use JavaScript or both for animating interfaces?

•  What are the different user interface layout systems that are currently in use?

•  How quickly can you learn new technology?

•  What do you like the most about being a UI Developer?

•  What is your typical day like in UI development?

•  What types of UI projects have you personally completed?

•  If we hire you, what do you think you can contribute to our company?

•  What do you know about our UI development projects?

What to Look for in UI Developer Candidates

The UI developer's portfolio should include a range of professional and personal projects. If they are inexperienced, they can show personal work samples. These can give a good indication of their skills. You want to know the following:

•  Do their layouts work properly in the browser?

•  Have they considered how different browsers display elements by default? Have they applied styles to minimize or eliminate these differences?

•  Have they taken into account how user settings in the browser affect the interface layout?

•  Do they know how to properly animate interface elements to guide user actions or show to the user that some action is taking place?

Strong communication skills and a pragmatic work attitude are a must since many UI development projects require collaboration with UX designers, application developers, writers, and others.
If the interview goes well, you will have the perfect User Interface developer for your organization’s web projects.
